Chapter Eleven

Abshedi is excited—sexually—by the threat of violence. By the monster.

I knew men like that back home. Men who got hard when they saw a fistfight on TV. Men who got hard from hitting someone. From being hit. But those men didn’t have the freedom or power Abshedi has.

For some reason, though he used me as a threat to get Taal to fight and absently played with my breasts, he doesn’t go further than that. I am eternally grateful when he groans and then pushes me away.

Almost before I can snatch my dress off the floor and pull the tattered edges over my breasts, three of the girls in the box rush to him. They know him. While he stares through the screen at the fight about to occur, they do what they’ve likely done a thousand times.

His wife continues to sit in her seat, but she has fallen asleep. Even with the noise, she sleeps. Her lips are parted and her head is back, and I can see the tips of her tongue thrusting in her mouth.

I clasp my trembling hands together and force myself to look at the one place I really don’t want to look. At Taal. At the beast.

It’s unreal, like a dream I know I’m having but can’t wake up from. Beast is enormous. Even bulky and hunched over, he is still ten feet tall. Shaggy fur, snout, tail. He looks like the most monstrous werewolf I’ve ever read about, imagined, or seen in a movie, crossed with a bear. Only he’s so very much bigger. And he’s real.

His mouth is full of pointed teeth, many, many teeth, and his claws are probably twelve inches long, curved, and dull white. I don’t know where he came from or if there are more of him, and I can’t imagine how Abshedi managed to capture him. I’ve heard he sends hunters out to find the most vicious creatures they can find, trap them, and bring them to fight in his sandpit.

Taal has outlasted them all. He is the most vicious creature they’ve found so far. But this creature, this Beast, is just too big. Too fast. He will slice Taal open with those wicked claws.

I can draw a little hope from the fact that Beast’s neck and ankles are wrapped with chains which anchor him to huge metal poles standing just outside the doorway. There are a few places where Taal can dart just out of reach, if he’s careful. But that doesn’t help when he has to run at the horrifying creature in order to attack it.

Abshedi commands him to fight the beast, not run from it.

“He’s a grizzwolf,” Bran says, sliding into the seat Abshedi abandoned. “He crashed his mik-ship eleven months ago and was near death when Abshedi’s men found him.”

I gape at her. “You can speak.”

She curls her lip. “Of course.”

There are roars that I can barely hear over the screams of the crowd, and while I’m staring at Bran, a body hits the screen so hard the box shakes.
